Peer case consultation for managers

Managers are often left alone with difficult situations: a conflict in the team, a conversation about performance, someone who is visibly under strain. Peer case consultation gives them a fixed group in which they work through such cases with other managers – following a clear procedure. The measure runs all year.

How does a case consultation work?

One person brings a case, one moderates, the others advise. The procedure is fixed: assign roles, describe the case, formulate a key question, choose a method, advise, close. A widely used description comes from Kim-Oliver Tietze (“Kollegiale Beratung”). A session takes about an hour. At the end, the case presenter decides what to take away.

Who should be in a group?

Four to seven managers who do not report directly to one another. Only then does everyone speak openly. Confidentiality is a must: cases and names stay in the group.

What does it cost?

Mainly time, about one hour a month. If you want support for the start, you will find moderators for the first sessions in the marketplace.

How to put it in place

  1. 1
Form a group of four to seven managers, if possible not in a direct reporting line to each other
  2. 2
Agree a fixed date, for example one hour once a month
  3. 3
Set the procedure: assign roles, describe the case, key question, choose a method, advise, close
  4. 4
Agree confidentiality: cases and names stay in the group
