Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Free Screening From Age 50
Colorectal cancer: the second most common cause of cancer death in Germany (approx. 25,000 deaths/year). Statutory health insurance covers: stool test (iFOBT) free every year from age 50 to 54 and every 2 years from age 55; colonoscopy free from age 50. Early detection rate: >90% chance of cure with early detection vs. <10% at a late stage. Many people don't know about this insurance benefit!
Idea to get started
Intranet post in March (Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month): "Use your free screening!" Create a list of insurance benefits by age. Occupational physician info session: 20 minutes, during lunch break. No-shame messaging: colorectal cancer screening is just as important as a mammogram.
Did you know?
People who take part in screening colonoscopy have a roughly 60 percent lower risk of developing colorectal cancer. That is the finding of a long-term study by the German Cancer Research Center with more than 9,000 participants.
