World Hepatitis Day: Hepatitis B Vaccination for Healthcare Professions
World Hepatitis Day (July 28). Hepatitis B: an occupational infection risk in healthcare. Transmitted through blood/bodily fluids via needlestick and cut injuries. STIKO recommends the vaccination for healthcare staff, emergency services and social professions with physical contact. If the infection risk is increased by the work, the employer must offer the vaccination as part of occupational health care (Section 6(2) ArbMedVV) and bear the cost (Section 3(3) ArbSchG) (German law). 3-dose primary immunization + titer check (anti-HBs ≥100 IU/l = reliable protection).
Idea to get started
Occupational physician checks: which employees have blood/bodily fluid exposure? Vaccination record check: is primary immunization in place? Titer check (anti-HBs) every 10 years. Record new employees immediately during onboarding. Non-responders (no immunity despite vaccination): special protocol.
Did you know?
World Hepatitis Day on July 28 is the birthday of Baruch Blumberg. He discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed a test and a vaccine for it, which earned him the Nobel Prize.
