Night work: occupational health examination for night workers
Night workers have the right to an occupational health examination before starting work and afterwards at intervals of no less than 3 years, annually from age 50; the employer bears the cost (Section 6(3) ArbZG, German law). The offer should be made actively. Includes: sleep quality, cardiovascular health, digestive health, mental health.
Idea to get started
Invite all shift workers (in writing, noting it's voluntary). Occupational physician addresses: sleep hygiene, nighttime nutrition, break scheduling. Document results. Adjusting the shift schedule based on health fitness as a trust-building measure.
Did you know?
In 2024, almost four million people in Germany worked at least occasionally at night between 11 pm and 6 am, nearly one in ten of all employed people. In healthcare the share was 17.6 percent.
